Simmer Pots

Making a Simmer Pot is a wonderful way to fill your home with the warm, spicy aromas of the Winter Season

I love Simmer Pots. I make them throughout the year for different reasons and different seasons, but this time of year they are especially amazing to make and boil. Not only are they fantastic to put on the stove when friends or family are stopping by, but they make wonderful gifts!

When I was a kid, my Mom often had a pot of potpourri simmering in a little crock pot, and I always loved how it smelled.

The whole house would fill with the warm and spicy aroma of oranges, cloves and cinnamon, and that scent to this day unlocks core memories for me. As an adult, and as a business owner, I have enjoyed making my own simmer pot blends. Not only do I give them as gfifts, but I sell them throughout the year in my online shoppe!

It's very simple, and here's how you can do it. Gather your supplies...I recommend chosing Citrus first. If you have some oranges or mandarins getting soft, slicing them for a simmer pot is a great way to use them up! If you're just doing. small pot on your stove, it only takes one or two citrus fruits sliced up. Next you'll want something from the Spice category. In fact, I typically add several spices...things like whole anise, cinnamon bark, and whole cloves are wonderful additions. You can even add nutmeg, ginger, or whatever scent you like! Then we want to add something from the woodsy category. This can be a few small pine clippings, sprigs of mint or rosemary, and even colorful items like cranberries work well in a simmer pot.

Simmer Pot Gift Bags

If you want to make up a bunch for gifts, that would be a great option too! Just be sure to dehydrate/dry out any of the fresh items such as the citrus, and cranberries. You don't want to give someone a molding bag of goodies, haha. I would recommend using cello bags and adding 1-2 cups worth of simmer ingredients to each one, gathering the top with some twine or holiday colored ribbon, and then adding a personalized instruction tag. What a fun gift for friends, neighbors, teachers or to bring along to holiday parties as a thank you gift.

To use your own simmer pot, just add the ingredients to a pot on the stove or a crock pot. Add 5-6 cups of water (of course this may vary depending on the size of your pot)...and then let it warm up and watch the aroma fill the house. Keep an eye on your pot because you don't want it to run out of water! You can re-use simmer pot ingredients for several days by simply adding more water each time you turn it on!
